Checkpoint: Final stretch before GOTY 2012 edition

checkpoint-final-stretch-before-goty-2012-edition

I follow the NeoGAF Games of the Year 2012 voting cut off date which means 2012 gaming does not end until Saturday, January 19th for me.

I only have one game that I would to wrap up before the polls close and that’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I have it and it’s ready to be played but I’ve been distracted by Mechwarrior Online open beta. (I’ll write up my impressions of it later.)

Since I can only select 10 games, I’d like to take this opportunity to point out some notable absentees from my list. These are titles that I chose not to play this year because it’s either coming out on a preferred platform in the future, lack of time or I just didn’t think it was going to make it into the top 10.

  • Fez
  • Mark of the Ninja
  • FTL: Faster than Light
  • Dishonored
  • Far Cry 3
  • Assassin’s Creed III
  • Persona 4: Arena

I’m certain I’m missing others but that’s alright. If it is truly notable, I will give it kudos in “2013′s 2012 game of the year”.

QSF5′s GOTY 2010 Day 3 of 3

goty-2010It’s the final day of my game of the year awards.

I mentioned that I was spreading this year’s awards over three days, but I didn’t mention why. It was part laziness, but it was also to give myself time to form my personal top 10. I was having a tough time trimming the list down to ten and selecting my number one game. I’m still not 100% sure on my pick, but whatever. In the end of the day, these are all great games.

But let’s start with a 2009 hit, I played in 2010.

Top Game from 2009

My favorite 2009 game which I started and completed in 2010.

Winner: Torchlight

torchlight-box-art

Torchlight was the first dungeon crawler that I ever completed. That’s worth noting because I’ve tried to play many games like this. Lots of smart choices made this game a pleasure to play from the vibrant art style to the streamlined interface. The only glaring omission was the lack of co-op, but they’ll be rectifying that with Torchlight 2 which is slated for late Spring 2011.

Runners up: Borderlands, Demon’s Souls, Torchlight, Trine

GiantBomb’s Game of the Year 2010

giantbomb-logoReally, they’re the only publication that matters to me and they’ve left us with scores and scores of podcasts and videos to consume during the holiday break.

Video recaps for days one, two and three are up, but I’m all about their deliberation podcasts. Listening to debates over semantics is strangely entertaining and informative. A word of warning for those who haven’t played many of the top 2010 games; these dudes are not holding back on the story spoilers.

If you want to stay clear of spoilers and are simply looking for great 2010 games to play, check out their personal top 10 videos. So far we have Alex’s, Drew’s and Ryan’s.

All great stuff to keep me entertained for the rest of the week.

Thanks, guys!

July 2010 NPD – Blast From the Past

npd-logoHardware

  1. Xbox 360 – 443, 500
  2. Nintendo DS – 398, 400
  3. Wii – 253, 900
  4. PlayStation 3 – 214, 500
  5. PlayStation Portable – 84, 000

Software

  1. 360 – NCAA FOOTBALL 11 – 368, 000
  2. PS3 – NCAA FOOTBALL 11 – 298, 800
  3. 360 – CRACKDOWN 2 – 208, 800
  4. Wii – SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 -193, 000
  5. NDS – LEGO HARRY POTTER: YEARS 1-4 -141, 700
  6. 360 – RED DEAD REDEMPTION
  7. Wii – LEGO HARRY POTTER: YEARS 1-4
  8. NDS – DRAGON QUEST IX: SENTINELS OF THE STARRY SKIES
  9. Wii – NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. WII
  10. 360 – CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2

The new Xbox 360 S continued to reinvigorate the platform for Microsoft while beating the Nintendo DS and everyone else while doing so. The PlayStation Portable slid below 100, 000 units once again. Poor Sony.

You know it’s a slow month for software when Modern Warfare 2 makes a reappearance in the top 10. Dragon Quest IX made it into the top 10, but with less than 141, 700 units sold. A damn shame since it’s quite the entertaining RPG.

June 2010 NPD Numbers Are Somewhat Calm

npd-logoHardware:

  1. DS – 510, 700
  2. Xbox 360 – 451, 700
  3. Wii – 422, 500
  4. PlayStation 3 304, 800
  5. PSP – 121, 000

Software:

  1. 360 – RED DEAD REDEMPTION – 582, 900
  2. Wii - SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 – 548, 400
  3. PS3 – RED DEAD REDEMPTION – 380, 300
  4. Wii – NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. WII – 200, 900
  5. Wii – JUST DANCE – 174,800
  6. WII FIT PLUS W/ BALANCE BOARD
  7. DS – TOY STORY 3
  8. 360 – UFC 2010: UNDISPUTED
  9. Wii – LEGO HARRY POTTER: YEARS 1-4
  10. PS3 – UFC 2010: UNDISPUTED

The Xbox 360 lead the home console pack for this month thanks to that new slim model. And that’s the only piece of hardware that jumps at me. The PSP jump in sales could be attributed to the summer vacationing crowd because it certainly wasn’t because of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

That’s one of the most notable absences in the top 10 software.

Red Dead Redemption continues to taunt me with its big sales and serve as a reminder that I need to pick that game up still. Super Mario Galaxy 2 continues its strong month-to-month sales with nearly 550, 000 additional units. That’s over 1 million in the U.S alone! Well deserved.
