Checkpoint: Podcasts of Interest Edition

Friday, September 19th, 2008

So with the death of GFW Radio podcast due to Jeff Green’s and Shawn Elliott’s exit of 1UP, my Wednesdays/Thursdays are now at a loss. There’s a podcast void which will be very difficult to fill. Not just because GFW Radio was such a quality podcast, but because I had a pretty strict podcast schedule.

Another Editor Leaves 1UP For Game Development

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Shawn Elliot of GFW Radio fame is leaving 1UP for a game development gig. He’s also known for his CS griefing and Team Fortress 2 Griefing:

I wonder if this is another one of his pranks. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Just like how I wouldn’t be surprised if he left 1UP.

1UP’s Jeff Green Leaves For The Sims Team

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Jeff Green is probably the ‘coolest’ 46 year old gamer I know. I had no idea he was with Ziff Davis for 17 years, but all good things must come to an end. And they have. Great sadness.

He was a great podcaster and will be missed. The Brodeo will not be the same without him!

GFW Live! Now Free

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Imagine paying $50 per year for matchmaking, in-game voicechat and multiplayer achievements for an online PC game.

Preposterous, isn’t?

Well, that’s what you had to do if you wanted to play a GFW Live! game with those features. After many, many months since its launch back in May 2007, Microsoft announced they will offer all those services for free effective immediately. It’s about time. Somebody has to keep Steam honest. Let’s see if GFW Live! can do it.

Microsoft will also be launching their GFW Live! Marketplace store this autumn as well. This will apparently house demos, DLC and other content. Is it safe to assume XBLA titles will be making their way over to the PC as well?

Ziff Davis Files for Chapter 11

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Ziff Davis, owner of 1UP, Games for Windows, EGM and GameVideos.com, filed for Chapter 11 AKA bankruptcy protection. The company has been in trouble for quite some me now and this latest piece of news does not exactly bode well for the publisher.

In addition to the troubling news, is the announcement of 1UP’s Bryan Intihar leaving for a “game development” gig. He’s the “Sports Guy” and was Previews Editor for quite awhile. He’s known for his hilarious loudness on several podcasts and he will be missed. A few people blame it on the 1UP Yours curse. I tend to agree.
