Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon was a tiring experience. Even saying the game’s full name is a life draining ordeal. Unlike with many of my other purchases, I walked into Devil Summoner 2 without any prior research; I placed my faith into Atlus after my wonderful romps through Persona 3 and 4. I though to myself “What was the worst that could happen?” Well, allow me to regale you with a tale of how my blind faith lead me astray.

LTTP or ‘late to the party’ pieces are opportunities for us to catch up and write about games we missed out on the first time around. They may contain spoilers.

Just under sixty hours were dedicated to completing Atlus’ latest entry to their Shin Megami Tensei Persona series. Persona 3: FES set a precedent for what I was expecting out of Persona game. There was going to be relationship development. There was going to be a serious dose of style. There was going to be some wickedly streamlined turn based battles. Persona 4 delivered on those expectations and then some. Atlus outdid themselves with Persona 4; it’s one hell of a game.

Videogames can be more than just entertainment. They can be a vessel for escape, a glimpse to something foreign or even a tool of learning. I didn’t think of Sega and Amusement Vision’s Yakuza 2 as any of that prior to my time with it. To say I was enamored by this action adventure would be putting it lightly. I adored Yakuza 2 for everything it did right and respected it for everything it attempted. So let me delve a bit deeper and explain why this PlayStation 2 game was one of my surprises of 2008.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve invested 80+ hours into a Japanese role playing game. I’ve played my share of them, but nothing quite like Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES. I’ve played RPGs which placed me in medieval times, in space and far into the future, but never as a Japanese school student living in modern Japan. Now, I’ve said I spent 80+ hours with it, but was it all worth it? I believe the obvious answer is: yes.

I toiled with VanillaWare’s Odin Sphere quite some time. It’s one of those games which I was skeptical of despite glowing reviews. Let me cut to the chase: Odin Sphere is not a good game. It’s a border line “okay” game with a handful of painful flaws. I picked up the game months after its North American release through a Boxing Day deal, but even then I don’t believe it’s worth the $29.99 CAD price tag. Well enough with the intro; let’s get down to it. (more…)
