The Last Guy: Impressions

I have not yet bought this game, nor do I know if I even will.  However, I have been having fun lately perusing the bountiful free ps3 Demo collection available on the Playstation Network Store.  Yeah yeah, everyones going on about how great Bionic Commando: Rearmed is and I wont offer my thoughts on it because we already have a review of the full game here

I played both demos, and clearly Bionic Commando is a more polished, American yokle-oriented game.  But I have to give some credit to The Last Guy.  Although it has a more crude and foreign feel to it, it has a lot of little unexpected surprises that were able to draw my interest without even experiencing them in the full game.

Okay so you control a guy top down a la GTA, you encounter slow moving zombies, and collect little people who run toward you until the time limit runs out and a rescue plane comes and takes you away.  At first I was kinda like, blah this is all you do? but after playing for about 5 minutes and getting some little people eaten by what looked like a cloud of smoke with an eye ball, I got a nostalgic feeling which I figure comes from the countless hours I put into painfully trying to beat Choplifter on the Sega Master System back when I was a wee lad.

The promotional slideshow at the end of the demo shows a little bit of promise with a glimpse of new enemies that show a little more complex A.I. than the slow moving zombies. from the demo level, as well as a monster the size of a city block who can shake the screen and make my dualshock rumble.   Online leaderboards were also shown off.

So, while not as polished an experience as Bionic Commando, I think the replay value is probably higher and it is more of a game that you can pick up and play for 5 minutes if that’s all you’ve got.

Prognosis:  Don’t count this one out if you’ve beaten BC:R and are bored with your life.

I didn’t like it all too much. Allow me to snag my post from NeoGAF:

“Yeah, I zoomed in, but it’s still very cluttered. I love my Geometry Wars and SSHD, but when things get cluttered there it isn’t a smearing of dirty brown, grey and green. I also felt that the game wasn’t meaty enough.

As a game which has you collecting things and bringing them to a point, I actually prefer Super Rub A’ Dub over this.”
