Xbox 360 Price Cut Coming Week of July 6th?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

If a K-Mart ad from the U.S. is to be believed, then we’re going to be receiving a $50 USD price cut for the Premium SKU of the Xbox 360. A solid cut which will set the new price at $299.99 USD. It will certainly rake in some sales.

No word for Canada yet.

If you’re curious what a K-Mart ad looks like, check the pic below. Thanks to HighDefDigest member Master X for it.

Coming to WiiWare: Megaman 9 Retro Style

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

I’m not the biggest fan of Megaman. I’m more of a Megaman X fan. Don’t ask me why, I’m just like that. So don’t hate on me if I’m not overwhelmed with joy with the announcement of Megaman 9 for WiiWare.

I’m guessing this game is squarely aimed at the nostalgic types. Not only are we getting the 9th installment of Megaman, we’re also going to get it in classic NES form. This game will be published by Capcom and developed by IntiCreates. Like more details? Here you go:

Like the graphics, the story takes a decidedly simplistic yet classic approach. Robots are causing havoc, and Dr. Wily blames Dr. Light for the wreckage. Mega Man sets out to clear his creator’s name while blowing up many, many things. And speaking of bosses, the article also gives us a look at the new roster: Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and Splash Woman. Yes, that says “woman”; after all, it’s 2008 and the series needed more fodder for robot-on-robot fanfic.

82% of PS3 Owners Online?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Console manufacturer business plans are interesting documents. Not only do they give details on upcoming games and services, they also provide some fascinating numbers.

While perusing Sony’s latest game division business plan, the most fascinating numbers to me were the this:

“Over 9.8 Million accounts worldwide”

That’s approximately 82% of the ‘12 million’ PS3 units sold worldwide if you take it at face value. The optmist in me says that number is quite possible seeing how PSN is free and everyone would have at least checked out the online services out of curiosity. Unfortunately, I’m also a bit of a pessimist and believe that a chunk of that ‘9.8 million’ consists of dummy American and Japanese accounts created by the curious and more savvy users. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Sony to sort that one out.

AMD Radeon HD 4870 - A Bargain At $299?

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Specifications wise, the 4870 and 4850 only differ in one area: core and memory clockspeeds. 750/900 (GDDR5) vs 625/993 (GDDR3). Everything else from transistor count to number of processors remain the same. The reason why the clockspeeds are so much higher for the 4870 is attributed to the default dual-slot cooler it comes with. More details? Check out the review from AnandTech.

It’s not a surprise to see how competitive the 4850 remains. It’s not that the 4870 is slow, it’s actually quite a bargain at $299 — it just doesn’t seem very appealing since the 4850 is so good!

1UP’s Gears of War 2 Multiplayer Preview

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

It’s one part preview and two parts interview with CliffyB and Gears of War 2. Burly men with chainsaws guns shooting the crap out of subterranean monsters. Is there anything more manly? Check out the 16 minute 1UP Special. Lots of details about the game’s multiplayer. All of it sounding awesome.

You can also check out Dan Hsu’s preview from EGM. It includes new screenshots! Oh, and using the sniper rifle as a bad ass club is golden.

NBA LIVE 09 Cover Athletes and Screens

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

So Tony Parker is going to grace the U.S. NBA LIVE 09 cover and Luol Deng is going to be the poster athlete for the U.K. version. I had no idea they featured different athletes for different regions. Anywho, I’m not too pleased with the lack of noticeable animation improvements over NBA LIVE 08.

The players themselves look fine, but they just need to move more naturally. Anyways, check these screens if you so desire.

SSF2T:HDR Screenshots From Xbox 360 Beta

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

If you decided to pick up the less than stellar Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 for the Xbox 360, you were granted access to the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix beta. I hear it comes with one stage, two characters (Ryu, Ken) and online play. Yay? I guess that depends on how much you’re loving the new look and how much spare change you have.

For the rest of us, we’ll settle for a handful of screenshots.

The Frivolous Geforce 9800 GTX+

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Nvidia’s Geforce 9800 GTX+ for $229 is no match for the overall buffness of the ATI Radeon HD 4850. Not really surprising since Nvidia didn’t even believe the speed bump warranted a full numerical upgrade.

Interestingly, AnandTech pointed out how the Geforce 8800 GTS 512MB and the Geforce 8800 GT are at a disadvantage when it comes to pricing. They will need to either lower price or axe one of the cards from retail shelves.

Since Nvidia has no real answer to the AMD Radeon HD 4850, I guess we have new mid-range king.

MGS4 Sales: 1 Million Units in Europe Alone

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I doubt it’ll make GTAIV numbers, but I was certain that it will break 1 million units in sales worldwide. Worldwide. Not in Europe alone.

So when I read that MGS4 sold 1 million units in Europe alone, I was impressed to say the least. In related news, all 25K worth of Limited Edition units were sold out as well. I’m curious how the U.S. market took MGS4. Europe sure loves its Metal Gear and I’m wondering if American gamers feel the same.

The June NPDs should be interesting. I’m especially interested to see if Metal Gear Solid 4 will do what GTAIV failed to do and that is: shift hardware units. Early reports of the MGS4 bundle being sold out is certainly pointing towards some form of hardware sales. I mean, they did sell out of initial stock and are planning to ship more in early July.

Five C&C: Red Alert 3 Screenshots

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I grew up a Blizzard RTS player. I still am. I wasn’t able to get into any of the Command and Conquers — they never clicked with me. It’s been many years since the original Red Alert and I’ve grown to accept different games now. So I may give EA’s upcoming Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 a legitimate chance. Or maybe not.

Anyways, enough talk, here are five screenshots from the PC build.
