Metal Gear Online Beta Impressions
There are plenty of armaments and attachments to toy with in MGO. Your proficiency with them depends on your skill set both literally and figuratively. Bitten by the skills system employed by other games such as Call of Duty 4, MGO allows players to equip their characters with 4 skills at a time. Unlike CoD4, MGO’s skills can be leveled up with repeated use. Personally, I don’t like this system. I’ve played for 7 hours and not a single skill has leveled up yet. Obviously, the developers want to give people reasons to keep playing the game, but did they need to give us this grind to accomplish it? You know it’s somewhat out of hand when I select a server and a warning tells me that there are those who are of higher levels playing within.
Community features are an important part of keeping an online game going. MGO’s online stat tracking, web based player pages and clan support makes life a lot easier for a group of players to play with each other. I am very impressed with it. Also, the options for both auto-matching and server browsing cannot be overstated. It’s a nice option and I wish more online games support it.
So there you have it. Metal Gear Online is a lot of game to digest and I’m still sorting through it all. It’s unlike any other online game I’ve ever played, but for better (and worse) it’s something that intrigues me. At first glance, many may be turned off by it and I don’t blame them. People aren’t used to being stunned, rendered unconscious or placed in a choke hold by some wily fellow who came at you from your blind spot. Since it’s such a different game, it has managed to keep my attention. There are niggling issues which could be ironed, but overall the game is functional with plenty to offer. I look forward to the retail version in June.

P.S – Konami unlocked Sneaking Mode, Solid Snake character and a new map for folks to try out. I’ll write about those later.
