Metal Gear Online Beta Impressions

Tactical third-person stealth action is what MGO is all about. Add in Metal Gear Solid 4’s CQC system, armaments, some of its gameplay options and you get one very unique experience. Let me break it down a bit.

In addition to the over-the-shoulder third person view, auto-aim and first person view offer additional options for players to rely on. While I can see the benefits of the auto-aim in closed quarters combat scenarios, it’s just a nightmare to negotiate when there are multiple foes in the area. First person mode gives additional precision for those well placed head shots, but I question its necessity. Would the game be better off without it? I think so.

Metal Gear’s influence becomes obvious when you see a box with legs running around. Boxes are randomly placed throughout every map and every player has the ability to use the box and attempt to blend into the environment. If you think that’s whacky; wait til you see a metal barrel rolling towards you. And if you think that cannot be topped, you’re wrong. The double edged sword that is the erotic magazine can be used to instantly distract foes and friends alike. These soldiers must be suffering from extreme cases of sexual anxiety if they can be subdued so easily.

Every player has two meters: health and consciousness meters. The consciousness meter gives players the opportunity to knock the other player out and essentially immobilize them. They cannot respawn or communicate with their team until they are woken up. Tranquilizer shots and choke holds diminish the consciousness meters and when used appropriately, it can turn the tide of battle. It must suck for that person who’s left in some lonely corner desperately trying to wake up or be put out of his misery. I foresee many griefing opportunities with this.
