The Ordeal

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

So I’m sitting at work on another ho hum day at work when I receive a delightfully surprising email from my friend No_Style who cites an interesting tidbit of information he probably found on the Gaf.  Little did I know at this point that I was about to embark on a mission that would raise the interesting bar of my day ten fold.

Official Sims 3 Site Up. Sorta.

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Either EA’s web servers are shit or a lot of people are checking out the Sims 3 site, because that website has been slow-to-unavailable for the entire day.

I’d just thought I’d let you all know.

COD4 Ruined and Fixed For PS3

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

COD4 was sitting unplayed for awhile for no other reason other than me waiting for the upcoming patch (which was released earlier today). Well, apparently, there was a good reason why I shouldn’t have played the game.

Yes, those are hacks. Entertaining hacks, but hacks nonetheless. If these latest hacks weren’t rendered useless by today’s patch, I’m staying away from COD4 for awhile longer. There are other videos online, but I’m not going to bother with them. I am tempted to go online to see these exploits in action for myself, but why should I do that when I can play Unreal Tournament 3 and experience a barrage of rockets and have it all be fair game?

GeForce 9800 GX2 Reviews Out

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

$599.99 for video card. Well, actually, it’s for two video cards. The GeForce 9800 GX2 is actually two lowere clocked GeForce 8800 GTS 512 MB in one card. What is the advantage of this? You can have the benefits of SLI without an SLI capable motherboard and you can put two of these video cards together in SLI for Quad SLI fun.

You can read the reviews of these behomoths over at HardOCP and AnandTech, but be warned: there’s plenty of overkill.

Disappointingly, this GeForce 9 series is slowly becoming nothing more than the GeForce 8 series rebranded with a slight bump in speed. At this point in time, the GeForce 8800 GT is still the video card to get; especially if it’s under $200 CAD.

Six Cores Is Better Than Four

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

intelcore2quad.jpgI recall the days of single core to dual-core transition. I hopped onto the bandwagon rather early because I saw and experienced the benefits first hand through the multi-threaded nature Hyper Threaded Pentium 4’s.

Dual-core is awesome and benefitial, but what about quad-core? Great for encoding, but overkill for a desktop. Most single applications have yet to fully utilize dual-cores. Even if you are running multiple CPU intensive tasks, dual-cores should suffice. That is, unless you insist on encoding 2 movies at the same time while playing World of Warcraft.

So why is Intel bringing a six core processor in the second half of 2008? For servers and those who multitask with the power of 3 persons of course. Just because we don’t need six cores, doesn’t mean Intel should stop pushing the boundaries.

Windows Vista SP1 Final Released to Public

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is finally available for public consumption. Microsoft intended for a mid-March public release and they delivered. The list of changes is quite hefty and very much appreciated.

You can download it from Microsoft’s site.

I’ve installed it and it’s been fine.

Army of Two Xbox 360 Impressions

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Army of Two logo

We’ve been waiting for it and it finally arrived on March 4th, 2008. Yes, after being delayed multiple times, EA’s Army of Twowas officially released to the public. I rented the game over the weekend so here are my impressions on EA’s latest shooter.

In short: A really good rental to play with a friend as this game is built with coop in mind.

The Sims 3 PC Gamer UK Scans Up

Monday, March 17th, 2008

I guess people really cannot wait until March 19th. InfiniteSims put up some scansof the latest PC Gamer UK’s coverage of The Sims 3. I perused it and came away intrigued. It looks like an evolutionary step and I guess for Sims fans: that’s a good thing. I noticed that you can make obese people now as well.

I hope the system requirements aren’t too hefty. I want this game to succeed. Why? It’s a whole lot better than those mini-game compilations other devs are churning out. The Sims brings out a lot of excellent work including mods and machinima videos.

European PSN Release Dates Leaked

Monday, March 17th, 2008

At first, I didn’t put much weight on this “leak“, but after some crafty sleuthing from NeoGAF poster, Basch, there may actually be some validity to it.

I’m personally excited for the following if it holds true:

SSBB - “Fastest-selling video game in Nintendo of America’s history”

Monday, March 17th, 2008

At a rate of 120 copies per minute or 2 copies per second, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, according to Nintendo, has become the fastest selling videogame in Nintendo of America’s history. Hurray for Nintendo. Once again, your software sells great on your console!

Not to sound cynical, but did anyone doubt Brawl’s sales here in North America?

Really?

P.S - Brawl is fun. A lot of fun.
