Fez - This Depends on Perspective as Well

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Similar to Echochrome, Fez relies on perspective. Fez is also quite similar to Sega’s Crush puzzle game for the PSP, but the camera and platforming action in Fez appear to be more free flowing.

Anyways, check out the gameplay video.

Echochrome - What You See Becomes Truth

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

This puzzler coming for PSN and PSP is going to be one serious mind bending game. I am definitely going to try this game out.

This clip is from Game Developer’s Conference ‘08. It’s the tutorial explaining the basic gameplay techniques of Echochrome.

Too Human Roundtable

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I cannot say I was excited for Silicon Knights’ Too Human, but after watching that video, I can say that I have some interest in it now. It’s basically 3D Diablo for the XBOX 360 which means it’s similar to Phantasy Star Online, but a lot more advanced. The game looks like it could use a few more frames to pull off smoother animation, though.

More gameplay videos below:

HD DVD Death Fallout

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

It’s been over for 12 hours now, but the news keeps rolling in after Toshiba pulled the plug on its ailing format.

While Toshiba may not be adopting Blu-ray “at the moment“, early naive/misinformed/idiotic consumers can find solice in the fact that their HD DVD collection could be viewed on upcoming combo players from LG who have taken it upon themselves to continue HD DVD support. That’s really nice of them. I mean, just because the format’s dead; it doesn’t mean that existing HD DVDs cease to function.

As for you fence sitters, may I recommend the PlayStation 3 as a Blu-ray player? Cnet says it’s a solid choice. Don’t believe they’re credible enough? Why not believe Sound and Vision Magazine then. Whatever you do, be sure to put Planet Earth on your list of Blu-rays to watch.

Sega and Bioware Shows Off Sonic RPG

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

sonic.jpgSomething about putting the fastest thing alive in one of the slowest genres around, RPGs, doesn’t jive well. Or does it? At this point in Sonic’s career, it may actually be in his best interest to slow down and just appear in a good game.

BioWare and Sega finally released screenshots of their collaborative RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

So far it looks uninteresting, but at least they’ve nailed down the vibrant colors.

It’s Over: Toshiba Kills HD DVD

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

After a series of mighty blows from retailers and rumors surrounding Toshiba’s inevitable decision; the leader of the red team officially called it quits for HD DVD.

“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,”

Quite possibly the smartest move they could have made for themselves and the high definition movie market.

The Present Is Blu.

PixelJunk Eden and PixelJunk Dungeons Revealed

Monday, February 18th, 2008

The developers over at Q-Games have a series of games for the PSN dubbed PixelJunk. Not the most welcoming name, but nonetheless the games under that brand are beginning to rub off on me. PixelJunk Monsters is awesome. So awesome that anything PixelJunk related (aside from the unappealing Racers title) grabs my attention.

The latest PixelJunk news comes courteousy of GamaSutra in the form of two new titles dubbed Eden and Dungeons.

All Things PSN with John Hight

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Stephen Totilo of MTV’s Multiplayer gaming blog got a chance to speak to Sony’s product developer, John Hight and discuss what Sony’s PlayStation Network offers to developers, gamers and what it hopes to achieve in the future.

Here are some quotes from the interview which I thought were delightful:

“We’re not afraid to put something out there that might defy the classical definition of what a game is. But we’re damn sure going to make sure it’s a high-quality experience and that it’s an entertaining experience.” That’s Hight, in the midst of extolling to me a PSN line-up that has included the meditative “flOw” and the rock-album-slash-shoot-em-up “Everyday Shooter.” If you haven’t tried PSN yet, Hight’s comment might sound extraordinary, but for someone like me who has downloaded and played all of the games on the service, it rings true. These guys are willing to experiment. And that, quite frankly, is a long way from “Q*bert.”

More “Phun” Than LittleBigPlanet

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Check this video of “Phun” I stumbled across from NeoGAF. It’s very similar to LittleBigPlanet, however “Phun” appears to be more robust with its inclusion of liquid simulation. (That is, based on what we have seen of LittleBigPlanet.)

After watching this video and the ease of creating content with a mouse, I sincerely hope Media Molecule considers implementing mouse support in LittleBigPlanet.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Japanese Impressions

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Super Smash Brothers Brawl is possibly the most anticipated Nintendo Wii title of 2008 and why shouldn’t it be? This fan service on a disc has a ridiculous amount of content for the Nintendo obsessed. The Japanese version of Brawl known as Dairanto Smash Brothers X was released a few weeks ago and I finally got my hands on it. Here are some impressions after taking it for a quick spin. Note that Brawl is a rather large game with plenty of modes to choose from. So where does one start? Subspace Emissary and classic multiplayer Brawl modes seemed appropriate and thus this preview will just touch on those two modes.
