While I’m not 100% sold on Lost Odyssey yet, repeated exposure to ads like the one below would surely help. The use of Jefferson Airplane’s “The White Rabbit” was a surreal choice; much like the use of “Mad World” for the Gears of War ad.
Want more numbers? Of course. Who doesn’t love numbers? If you don’t: too bad. Sony released some Quarter 3 financials today and they look pretty good overall. Their game division posted profits after several quarters of losses. Improvements were attributed to the reduction of PS3 hardware costs, increased software sales and improved PSP sales.
Sony also changed their forecast a bit by increasing projected financial year end PSP sales from 10 million to 13 million and reducing PS3 sales projections from 11 million to 9.5 million. It’s nice to set goals, but did Sony truly believe they can sell 11 million to retailers by the end of the fiscal year?
As for Sony’s electronics division, they posted increased sales, but a decrease in profits citing exchange rate and SGA as factors.
While perusing NeoGAF, a straight forward thread title caught my eye: “Battlefield: Heroes Screenshots“. I was quite fascinated with the idea and Team Fortress 2-esque art style. I didn’t know what to expect when I clicked the thread, but it was certainly not this:
Definitely not what I envisioned, but I’m not counting it out yet. I have to see it in motion first! There was also some re-iteration of info to accompany these screenshots which Quellex summed up in his post:
According to Blizzard’s financial report released today, the World of Warcraft developer posted $1.2 billion in revenue. That’s a lot of money. Of course, it’s all thanks to dedicated players like Effah, 4ftermath and Robocrotch. Way to go guys. Thanks for all your help in financing StarCraft Online!
With the Wrath of the Lich King expansion coming sometime this year, it would not surprise me to see a repeat in revenue postings next year.
It’s a generally accepted that the XBOX 360 Arcade (formerly known as Core) SKU (sans hard drive) should not be purchased by anyone who considers themselves a gamer. Unfortunately, since the SKU exist; uneducated consumers will purchase it which means Microsoft has to do their best to accommodate them.
At the moment, the XBOX Live! Arcade download size limit is set at 150 MB. Awhile back, the limit was raised from 50 MB in order to for Konami’s Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to be released. Why was this limit imposed? Was it to help gamers save bandwidth? Or was it imposed in order to help Arcade SKU owners save precious memory card space? Guess which possibility I believe.
There was a huge outpouring of information after the Hong Kong release of Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Marth and Ness were confirmed as returning playable characters amongst the already hefty roster. You can read the rest of the info at this site here or you can just watch the awesome intro below.
There’s so much fan service in SSBB — it’s almost sickening. I absolutely adore the music as well.
To me, the Cell Broadband Engine is a fascinating piece of technology with a vast amount of computing power and potential. One of the pitfalls of the Cell processor aside from being notoriously difficult to program for, is the chip’s rather power hungry appetite. Well, since IBM announced that the 65 nm version of this monsterous beast is already in full swing, it should nto be surprising to find out that a 45 nm version is in the works.
The 65 nm version of Cell (available only in 40 GB PS3 at the moment) already helps slice the power consumption of the PS3 from 200W to 135W. By switching from the 65 nm to the 45 nm process, Sony hopes to cut the power consumption of the Cell by 40 percent. Will this mean we will be seeing PSThree Slims in the not so distant future? One could only hope!
This year’s Game Developers Conference (February 18-22) is shaping up to be quite the event. The most recent news concerning GDC states that Crysis and Far Cry developer, Crytek, will be demonstrating their engine and its prowess as a middleware solution. The demonstration will show the CryENGINE 2 running on the PS3, a XBOX 360 and a $600 low-end PC. I am not expecting vast jungles filled with lush vegetation, but I am expecting at least some scaled down jungles and jaw dropping interior renders.
I also hope they show off some of those CryENGINE 2 related ”secret technologies” they are supposedly working on for the PS3.
On April 17th, 2008, North American PS3 owners will finally be able to pay $39.99 USD for their very own copy of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. I know there are some hardcore Gran Turismo fans out there, but $40 for what is essentially a “glorified” demo is a bit too much. I believe GT5: Prologue is coming out 4 months too late and $10 too expensive — I’m opting out.
I have tried the PSN demo (of a demo) from the Japanese PSN Store and I came away very impressed. It definitely has the potential of being a fantastic instalment in the Gran Turismo series. I just hope they squeeze in some car damage and amped up artificial intelligence into the final product.
Thanks to GamerSyde for the screenshot and many more screenshots which can be found here.
