Verne Troyer’s turn

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

It seems that Blizzard is adding more and more celebrities to advertise the World of Warcraft. Verne Troyer joined the party this week. In case you don’t know who he is,  he played “Mini-me” in the Austin Powers series.

The Ultimate PS3 Media Streaming Solution Is Here

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

The Past

Ever since DLNA support was added to the PLAYSTATION 3 in firmware 1.80, I have been streaming all sorts of media to my living room and HDTV in a configuration similar to this:

Pre FW 2.10

Early on, I transcoded my Top Gear and American Dad episodes from my PC via TVersity since a majority of my content was encoded in DivX/XviD format (incompatible with the PS3 at the time). While the solution worked, it had some inconvenient setbacks:

  • Computer(s) must be on in order to view/access all media.
  • Image quality suffered due to transcoding.
  • TVersity service needed to be restarted in order to become visible to the PS3.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Review

Monday, December 17th, 2007

You may have experienced life as a space marine, stealth assassin, special agent or even life as a scantily clad woman, but have you been just an “ordinary man”? Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune places you in this very role of being an ordinary man, named Nathan Drake, who happens to be the descendent of famous English explorer, Sir Francis Drake. While Drake lacks the military training of a hardened marine and the finesse of ninja, he somehow embarks on quite the pulp action adventure starring pirates, mercenaries, booby traps and bottomless pits. The prize of this adventure: the lost treasure of El Dorado.

R.I.P. Xbox360

Monday, December 17th, 2007

So my Xbox360 decided it was time to let go and died yesterday. It decided it didn’t like to play games anymore and freeze when I do. On the good side, it happened just a few days before the 1 year warranty expires. It expires on Boxing Day (December 26th). I learned last night, after calling Microsoft, that the 3 year warranty that they advertised a few months ago, only covers the famous Red Rings of Death. I am filing a replacement with Microsoft. Unfortunately, this means that I will be out of my Xbox360 for the next few weeks and I will be missing my “oh-so” anticipated gaming week during the holidays. I had a few games on the shelf waiting for this period to come so I guess that Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect are going to have to wait.

I will then be able to evaluate Microsoft’s customer support for the Xbox360 and write something down later on it. (Depending how everything goes!) For now, the customer service rep I talk to was pretty good and polite. (I know that it’s his job to be, but I had bad experiences with other places!) We tried multiple things but nothing got my Xbox360 working fine again!

Stay tuned…

Bonus Round: Year in Review Part 2 of 4

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

In this episode, Keighley, Croal, Pachter and Satterfield talk Microsoft and all the buzz which surrounded them this past year. Some wacky insights by Pachter as always, but his comment about the possibility of Mass Effect coming to PS3 is putting my initial plan of purchasing Mass Effect on Boxing Day into question.

You can watch the episode here.

Shadow of the Colossus ‘Wanderer on the Offensive (Live Edit) Song

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Dedicating an entire entry to a song? Yes, but not just any song either, an OCRemix song. As a big fan of both the VG remixes and VG music in general, this latest entry from the OCRemix has all the ingredients of an awesome track. Here is a quote from djpretzel’s post:

”WHOA! Viola + rock = win. I love everything about this mix. Wonderfully mixed, wonderfully performed, and the arrangement just takes two great songs and integrates them seamlessly.”

On the fourth listen through right now and it is nothing, but pure awesome. In the words of my colleague from work: “This song is sick!”

Download it from OCRemix.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles: Impressions

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Res Evil: UC Logo

There is no logical reason as to why I spent so much energy beating Super Mario Galaxy to 121 stars with Luigi as fast as I could. After it, I didn’t have anything else that I really wanted to play. I guess that’s the mentality I have developed towards video games these days: Play through any and all single player content as fast as possible, then relax and ease into a nice multiplayer experience if there is one available. Perhaps this is why I have such a jaded early impression of Umbrella Chronicles. I have only played two levels thus far, and at first, I was not very impressed. When you begin, you choose to play as either Rebecca or the other guy (Joel I think). Of course, I chose to play as Rebecca in case they happened to slip a sex scene in there somewhere, but unfortunately and unsurprisingly this did not occur. Yet I did have some hope as some games nowadays do slip them in like The Witcher which apparently has a cut scene with the main character boning his co-star in the first 30 minutes of play. But alas, I digress.

No_Style’s Checkpoint: Die Hard Edition

Friday, December 14th, 2007

It has been a good week with the site accumulating some exposure thanks to N4G, but this post is not about the website. It is all about the weekend.

Checked out Bleach 152 and the latest 1UP Show featuring WiiFit, God of War: Chains of Olympus and Burnout: Paradise. WiiFit will end up in my home when it arrives in North American shores. Loads of fun will be had. God of War: Chains of Olympus, appears to be an incredible portable feat and as for Burnout: Paradise? Well, you can read my impressions of the demo for my thoughts on it.

Gaming wise, I plan to finish of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and hopefully push out the review by Tuesday. Intermixed, will be continued sessions of Final Fantasy Tactics and Call of Duty 4 multiplayer. Unfortunately, my copy of Unreal Tournament III did not make it here yet.

In addition, if all goes according to plan, I will have watched the first three Die Hard (on DVD) movies by the end of the weekend. I am sure this will make our webmaster, Robocrotch, very happy.

P.S - Check out the Valve merchandise. I want that cup and some of these prints. Sentry. Do want.
